6 Drag down the same paint mix to create reflections of the grasses, then pick up burnt umber on the end of the brush and darken the waterline.

7 Use the half-rigger and midnight green to paint reeds and grasses, and their reflections beneath.

The finished marsh.

Here the water is still and the trees and reflections are soft and misty, in sharp contrast to the foreground reeds. The crisp, clear foreground against the out-of-focus background suggests distance in the painting.

Boat

Each section within this exercise is painted separately, but a hairdryer can be used to dry the stages to speed up the process.

1 Draw the boat and reflection or trace and transfer them from this page. Paint a wash of ultramarine using the large detail brush around the boat and reflection. Leave white paper for ripples beneath the boat.
